Onanda Park
About half a mile south of Sunrise Lakehouse you will find Onanda Park. This can make for a fine morning or afternoon stroll down West Lake road if you decide to walk there. There is also plenty of parking there if you prefer to drive. The park includes 15 cabins (7 on the upland side and 8 on the lakeside), 5 pavilions and 3 lodges/halls available for rent. The uplands consist of seventy-three acres of hillside including a two-mile hiking path, pavilions, winter sledding and overflow parking. It is a nice place for fishing, swimming, and picnics. There is also a playground on site for the children to enjoy.
Swimming is only permitted when a lifeguard is on duty.
Here is the most recent swimming schedule:
May 26 - August 17:10:00 am - 8:00 pm
August 18 - September 3:11:00 am - 6:00 pm
Park rules and regulations: No alcohol, pets (other than service dogs), roller-blades or skateboards allowed in the Park. No bike riding is allowed on the lake-side. Shore fishing is allowed year round. Canoes & kayaks are allowed to launch from Onanda Park on a regular basis and are subject to rules posted on signs at the lake. The canoes and Kayaks are allowed to be transported car top. Canoes and kayaks are not allowed to be towed behind a vehicle. Boat launching is only permitted April15 to November 15, and is subject to availability.
Barnes Creek Gully
The trailhead to this area is located on the opposite side of the street of Onanda park.
Number of waterfalls: 3 within the park boundaries.
The first waterfall, roughly 35 ft high, cascades gently as it turns 45 degrees over the top segment and then widens, tumbling over smooth shale into a shallow pool below.
The second waterfall, nearly 8 ft tall, is an irregular cascade over layers of dark limestone.
The final waterfall, roughly 50 ft high, is a large cascade that fans out as it reaches the bottom, which is often littered with boulders and downed trees.
You can visit any time of the year but probably the best time to visit is just after it rains when the water is really flowing. The falls are usually a trickle for most of the year, so visit after long periods of rain or during the spring melt. In winter you can hike the uplands trail and see the two large waterfalls safely from above.
